Enrichment:Opportunities for Growth
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS
NYHS's in-school programming is supported by a rich after-school program that includes partnerships with water related
organizations throughout New York City. Student leaders have participated in a variety of these activities, including:
• Building three wooden kayaks with the East River Apprentice Shop.
• Constructing a 14-foot Whitehall gig row boat with Rocking the Boat at the South Street Seaport Museum.
• Creating an open-water rowing team that practices at Pier 40 in the Hudson River. The team completed its second
annual trek to the Icebreaker Race in Boston in November 2004, and had one boat continue unbeaten for two years.
• Learning to sail small craft at Manhattan Sailing School.
• Hosting the first PSAL Swim Meet in Bushwick since 1996.
• Becoming certified scuba divers.
• Playing for the school's water polo team.
• Acting as stewards for New York Harbor and spokespeople for the school as members of the elite Harbor Corps, a 12-
member team sponsored by the Police Athletic League.
In addition to water-related after-school programs, Harbor School offers a wide variety of other after-school activities,
including a knitting club, a chess club, cheerleading, step dancing, break dance, double dutch, yearboo - The Tide,
an active drama club that has produced two staff and student-written plays, a bio diesel engine building club,
photography, snowboarding, rock climbing, a peer-mediation group, and a Bridge-to-Credit tutoring program that
provides academic remediation.
ACADEMIC EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
• Four students received $15,000 scholarships for next year to The Island School,
• One student accepted to the Maine Coast Semester School on scholarship.
• Negotiations have begun with maritime schools in Holland and China for future exchanges.
