Teacher + Counselor Recommendations Step 1 - Submit a Brag Sheet A quick resume-style summary of your achievements and experiences to help recommenders write a strong letter. Sample Brag Sheet Step 2 - Request Recommendation Letters You will need to ask teacher, counselor, or mentor to write a short letter highlighting your strengths as a student. Who to Ask: Someone who knows you well An experienced teacher (if possible) Someone who can speak to your academics/character Someone reliable Someone genuinely supportive Note on Processing Time Please allow up to three weeks from the time you submit your brag sheet for your teacher and counselor recommendations to be completed. About CUNY and SUNY Colleges . . . All seniors are encouraged to complete a CUNY application . CUNY institutions provide high academic standards, renowned faculty, and low tuition costs. Students receive a world-class education with minimal debt burden. 2025 Free Application Periods The CUNY $65 Freshman Application Fee will be waived for New York City Public School (NYCPS) students during CUNY Free Application Period taking place from October 27th to November 21st. The SUNY $50 per campus application fee will be waived for all students during SUNY Free Application Period taking place from October 24th to November 6th. College & Career Counselor’s Corner - Spring SAT 2026 Beginning in the spring semester, juniors will start receiving dedicated postsecondary advisory support, which will be built directly into your regular daily schedule. Here are some Postsecondary Readiness Timeline highlights: Spring 2026 (This Spring - Junior Year): Start exploring colleges, attending college fairs, planning your senior year courses, begin thinking about your college essay, take the School Day SAT and start identifying teachers for recommendation letters. Summer 2026 : Arrange college visits and campus tours, narrow college list, start working on applications when the Common App launches on August 1st (make sure to create an account!). Fall 2026 (Senior Year): Application season! Finalize your college list to about 12 schools, create your FSA ID accounts and complete the FAFSA, complete TAP and/or CSS Profile (if applicable), request recommendation letters, and submit applications. Aim to complete applications by December 1st—the earlier, the better! Spring 2027 (Senior Year): Decision time! Compare offers (including financial offers), formally accept your spot at your chosen college, decline other offers, and complete enrollment steps. The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) helps eligible New York State residents pay tuition at approved schools in New York State. TAP is one of the grants, scholarships and awards programs administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Come colleges require the CSS profile in order to be eligible for need-based financial aid. The CSS Profile Is available through the College Board becomes available on October 1st. The CSS Profile asks detailed questions about your family’s financial profile. Unlike FAFSA, there is a fee to register and additional fees to submit the CSS Profile to each school. We had an action packed trip starting in Tokyo, where we visited temples and shrines in Meiji, Asakusa, and Akihabara. We also spent a day tasting incredible food at the Tsukiji Market, visiting Harajuku and Shibuya. From Tokyo, we headed toward Osaka - spending a night at the foot of Mt. Fuji, visiting Kyoto, and taking the bullet train. The entire trip was jam packed with culturally enriching, and truly extraordinary experiences. I have travelled all over the world, and this was by far one of my favorite and most rewarding trips. Spring 2025 Bahamas Davere Hanson, NYHS Faculty Each year, students in New York Harbor School’s Professional Diving program travel to The Island School on Eleuthera, Bahamas, for an intensive, week-long expedition that blends PADI dive certification with real marine science in one of the world’s most vibrant reef ecosystems. In partnership with Island School educators and the Cape Eleuthera Institute, Harbor School divers spend their days in the water completing Open Water and Advanced Open Water dives, practicing skills developed during their training in New York Harbor and pool sessions as they work toward industry-recognized diving credentials. A typical day in the Bahamas begins with assembling and checking their own gear, boarding small research vessels, and diving on coral reefs where they learn to conduct underwater surveys, identify reef organisms, and observe the impacts of climate change, pollution, and coastal development. When students return to campus each afternoon, they live and learn on a sustainable, research-focused island community powered largely by renewable energy, participating in seminars, reflection sessions, and ecological fieldwork that connects their tropical dive experience to marine restoration efforts back home. For many students, this is their first time traveling beyond New York City or seeing a coral reef firsthand, making the trip a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Over the years, the Bahamas expedition has become a defining milestone of the Professional Diving CTE pathway—an unforgettable journey that strengthens technical skills, deepens scientific understanding, and embodies Harbor School’s mission to prepare students for maritime college and career pathways through rigorous, real-world, ocean-based learning.

Through our eight state and industry-certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs — Aquaculture, Marine Biology Research, Marine Policy & Advocacy, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, Vessel Operations, Marine Systems Technology, and Welding — students build real-world skills that open doors to college, careers, and civic leadership. We are especially proud to have launched our Pathways in Technology Early College High School, or P-TECH, program this year in partnership with SUNY Maritime College — the only P-TECH collaboration in New York City connected to a SUNY institution. This groundbreaking initiative allows students to earn both their high school diploma and an Associates Degree in a maritime-focused field, all while gaining valuable industry experience. It represents a bold step forward in our commitment to expanding opportunities and shaping the future of maritime education. Our academic offerings are robust and designed to prepare students for post-secondary success. We offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, College Now classes in collaboration with local colleges, and have a dedicated college and career counselor to guide students through their academic journey. Our 11th and 12th grade advisory courses provide personalized support, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to successfully prepare for their lives beyond high school. Our students don’t just learn about environmental and maritime work — they actively participate in it through deep and meaningful partnerships. The school works hand-in-hand with the Billion Oyster Project to support the restoration of New York Harbor’s once-thriving oyster population. This hands-on environmental restoration project is integrated directly into our curriculum and offers students unparalleled access to field science, ecological data, and marine habitat restoration efforts — all while contributing to the health of our city’s waterways. We also work closely with Earth Matter NY, another Governors Island–based organization, to provide students with valuable experiences in composting, sustainable agriculture, and waste reduction.
