Harbor Corps is a student leadership and service group open to all Urban Assembly New York Harbor School students led by the Billion Oyster Project. During the school year the group meets once a week on Wednesdays, to exchange information about their particular Career and Technical Education program, plan collaborative events focused on harbor issues, support development programs at Harbor School, and perform volunteer work for the Billion Oyster Project. In many ways, the club functions as a sort of parallel student government, with its members taking a leading role in organizing in-school and extracurricular activities and often representing the school and BOP at off-island public meetings and events. The mission of this program is rooted in advocacy - for both Harbor School and the New York Harbor. Harbor Corps supports students who are go-getters and provides a space for students to develop their professional skills, through connecting them to the Billion Oyster Project and external partners. This program doesn’t only serve the students but also helps Harbor school through the exchange of CTE updates amongst the student body across years, as there is no other space for this to happen. An average of 18 students attend the weekly Harbor Corps meetings with 2 students leading the group (one senior and one junior to ensure continuity). Students have engaged with staff at the Billion Oyster Project, city council members, waterfront companies from Staten Island, Friends of Bushwick Inlet, members from the American Canoe Association at the bi annual trip to Lake Sebago, and mentoring at the Harbor Middle School in Red Hook.

An advocacy club focused on current events. Each month will focus on a different issue.

After school welding and metal working. This year the HI is applying to become an American Welding Society student chapter.

Students also learn about fish species native to our waters by identifying fish that we catch. The students also stock the aquarium in the vestibule of Harbor School with fish we catch each fall.

Students will prepare for math competitions such as AMC and participate in the NYC Interscholastic Math League (NYCIML) starting in the winter.
