Trip photos Summer 2025 Japan Laura Desmond, NYHS Faculty In August 2025 we traveled to Japan for an unforgettable and life changing trip. We had an action packed trip starting in Tokyo, where we visited temples and shrines in Meiji, Asakusa, and Akihabara. We also spent a day tasting incredible food at the Tsukiji Market, visiting Harajuku and Shibuya. From Tokyo, we headed toward Osaka - spending a night at the foot of Mt. Fuji, visiting Kyoto, and taking the bullet train. The entire trip was jam packed with culturally enriching, and truly extraordinary experiences. I have travelled all over the world, and this was by far one of my favorite and most rewarding trips. Spring 2025 Bahamas Davere Hanson, NYHS Faculty Each year, students in New York Harbor School’s Professional Diving program travel to The Island School on Eleuthera, Bahamas, for an intensive, week-long expedition that blends PADI dive certification with real marine science in one of the world’s most vibrant reef ecosystems. In partnership with Island School educators and the Cape Eleuthera Institute, Harbor School divers spend their days in the water completing Open Water and Advanced Open Water dives, practicing skills developed during their training in New York Harbor and pool sessions as they work toward industry-recognized diving credentials. A typical day in the Bahamas begins with assembling and checking their own gear, boarding small research vessels, and diving on coral reefs where they learn to conduct underwater surveys, identify reef organisms, and observe the impacts of climate change, pollution, and coastal development. When students return to campus each afternoon, they live and learn on a sustainable, research-focused island community powered largely by renewable energy, participating in seminars, reflection sessions, and ecological fieldwork that connects their tropical dive experience to marine restoration efforts back home. For many students, this is their first time traveling beyond New York City or seeing a coral reef firsthand, making the trip a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Over the years, the Bahamas expedition has become a defining milestone of the Professional Diving CTE pathway—an unforgettable journey that strengthens technical skills, deepens scientific understanding, and embodies Harbor School’s mission to prepare students for maritime college and career pathways through rigorous, real-world, ocean-based learning. Discover the story of New York Harbor School, a maritime-themed NYC public high school on Governors Island offering hands-on education in marine science, CTE programs, and environmental stewardship. We have a nurse at all times, an EMT on the island at all times, and we call 911 if need be. If it is an emergency, the boat schedule is changed to accommodate the ambulance. If a child needs to go to the hospital, they will be accompanied by a member of our staff. What happens if my child doesn’t make the last boat off the island? We get this question all the time! It has never happened but our plan would be to inform Governors Island and they would pick up your child. To view the ferry schedule click here. How do I change my address? To process a change of address, please confirm your new home/mailing address and provide two (2) proofs of address from the list below: Acceptable documents include (choose any two): Lease agreement, deed, mortgage statement for the residence; A residential utility bill (gas or electric) in the resident’s name issued by a utility company (such as National Grid or Con Edison) and must be dated within the past 60 days; A bill for cable television services provided to the residence; must include the name of the parent and the address of the residence and be dated within the past 60 days; Documentation or letter on letterhead from a federal, state, or local government agency, including: the IRS, the City Housing Authority, the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, the Human Resources Administration, or the Administration for Children Services (ACS), or an ACS subcontractor, indicating the resident’s name and address. Documentation must be dated within the past 60 days; A current property tax bill for the residence; A water bill for the residence, must be dated within the past 90 days; Rent receipt which includes the address of residence, must be dated within the past 60 days; State, city, or other government issued identification (including an IDNYC card), which has not expired and includes the address of residence; Income tax form for the last calendar year; Official NYS Driver’s License or learner’s permit, which has not expired; Official payroll documentation from an employer issued within the past 60 days, such as a paystub with home address, a form submitted for tax withholding purposes, or payroll receipt (a letter on the employer’s letterhead is not adequate). The Billion Oyster Project is a citizen science project coordinated by the New York Harbor School with the goal of restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. Our hope is that the harbor will once again be the most productive waterbody in the North Atlantic and will reclaim its title as the oyster capital of the world.
