Credential Requests - If you have not received your NYCSA, Jupiter and/or Operoo credentials we don't have your correct contact on file. Please fill out this form at your earliest convenience. Thank you How do I get a new school ID Card? To request a new ID card, please complete the following form: School ID & Photo Request How can I get a OMNY Pass (MetroCard)? Schools distribute student MetroCards (OMNY passes this year) to eligible students at the beginning of the year. Please note that there is a limited supply, so please do NOT lose throughout the semester. For more information from the NYC DOE, please click the link below: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/transportation/student-omny-cards If a student needs a replacement OMNY card due to loss or damage, they should go to the Main Office and add their name to the OMNY replacement waitlist. Once the request is submitted: The Main Office will cancel the lost or damaged card. A replacement OMNY card will be issued. The student will be notified as soon as the new card is ready for pickup. Please note that replacement cards may take up to 10 school days to process. How do I sign up for Remind Text Messaging? Families should have received an email in late July with sign-up instructions. If you need further assistance, please reach out to our Parent Coordinator, Carla Gabaldon, cgabaldon@newyorkharborschool.org. What is the health emergency plan at the Harbor School? We have a nurse at all times, an EMT on the island at all times, and we call 911 if need be. If it is an emergency, the boat schedule is changed to accommodate the ambulance. If a child needs to go to the hospital, they will be accompanied by a member of our staff. What happens if my child doesn’t make the last boat off the island? We get this question all the time! It has never happened but our plan would be to inform Governors Island and they would pick up your child. To view the ferry schedule click here. How do I change my address? To process a change of address, please confirm your new home/mailing address and provide two (2) proofs of address from the list below: Acceptable documents include (choose any two): Lease agreement, deed, mortgage statement for the residence; A residential utility bill (gas or electric) in the resident’s name issued by a utility company (such as National Grid or Con Edison) and must be dated within the past 60 days; A bill for cable television services provided to the residence; must include the name of the parent and the address of the residence and be dated within the past 60 days; Documentation or letter on letterhead from a federal, state, or local government agency, including: the IRS, the City Housing Authority, the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, the Human Resources Administration, or the Administration for Children Services (ACS), or an ACS subcontractor, indicating the resident’s name and address. Documentation must be dated within the past 60 days; A current property tax bill for the residence; A water bill for the residence, must be dated within the past 90 days; Rent receipt which includes the address of residence, must be dated within the past 60 days; State, city, or other government issued identification (including an IDNYC card), which has not expired and includes the address of residence; Income tax form for the last calendar year; Official NYS Driver’s License or learner’s permit, which has not expired; Official payroll documentation from an employer issued within the past 60 days, such as a paystub with home address, a form submitted for tax withholding purposes, or payroll receipt (a letter on the employer’s letterhead is not adequate). The Billion Oyster Project is a citizen science project coordinated by the New York Harbor School with the goal of restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. Our hope is that the harbor will once again be the most productive waterbody in the North Atlantic and will reclaim its title as the oyster capital of the world.

This year marked my first as Principal, and I can say with complete sincerity: this is an extraordinary school. Every morning, I step off the ferry to Governors Island and feel energized by the same thing that keeps our school thriving — the students. Their curiosity, joy, and daily smiles remind me that learning can be a source of positivity for our more than 500 students. Our school is unlike any other in New York City. Nestled on Governors Island in the heart of New York Harbor, we offer a one-of-a-kind experience rooted in environmental stewardship, maritime learning, and hands-on career preparation. Through our eight state and industry-certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs — Aquaculture, Marine Biology Research, Marine Policy & Advocacy, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, Vessel Operations, Marine Systems Technology, and Welding — students build real-world skills that open doors to college, careers, and civic leadership. We are especially proud to have launched our Pathways in Technology Early College High School, or P-TECH, program this year in partnership with SUNY Maritime College — the only P-TECH collaboration in New York City connected to a SUNY institution. This groundbreaking initiative allows students to earn both their high school diploma and an Associates Degree in a maritime-focused field, all while gaining valuable industry experience. We offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, College Now classes in collaboration with local colleges, and have a dedicated college and career counselor to guide students through their academic journey. Our 11th and 12th grade advisory courses provide personalized support, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to successfully prepare for their lives beyond high school. Our students don’t just learn about environmental and maritime work — they actively participate in it through deep and meaningful partnerships. The school works hand-in-hand with the Billion Oyster Project to support the restoration of New York Harbor’s once-thriving oyster population. This hands-on environmental restoration project is integrated directly into our curriculum and offers students unparalleled access to field science, ecological data, and marine habitat restoration efforts — all while contributing to the health of our city’s waterways. We also work closely with Earth Matter NY, another Governors Island–based organization, to provide students with valuable experiences in composting, sustainable agriculture, and waste reduction. Parents are elected through the NYHS PTA to serve on the SLT. One of the NYHS PTA co-presidents automatically serves on the SLT. School Leadership Teams are vehicles for developing school-based educational policies, and ensuring that resources are aligned to implement those policies. SLTs assist in the evaluation and assessment of a school’s educational programs and their effects on student achievement. SLTs play a significant role in creating a structure for school-based decision making, and shaping the path to a collaborative school culture. New York State Education Law Section 2590-h requires every New York City Public School to have a School Leadership Team. SLT team members are responsible for: participating in the development and review of the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP); ensuring that the budget is aligned to support the CEP; working collaboratively with team members to share ideas and concerns, and listening to the ideas and concerns of others; engaging in collaborative problem-solving that will lead to consensus-based decisions that meet the needs of all students; sharing the views of their constituencies with the team; and engaging in conflict resolution processes when necessary. Elections for parent positions on the SLT are held in the spring at a NYHS PTA meeting. SLT meetings are open to all parents and you are welcome to attend meetings or submit ideas or issues for discussion. SLT meetings are held online from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Prepare for a career in maritime engineering with New York Harbor School’s Marine Systems Technology program. Study marine mechanics, electrical systems, fabrication and complete industry internships. MARINE SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY The demand for well trained marine engineers, marine mechanics, marine technicians and metal fabricators is extremely high. The Marine Systems Technology program offers an entry way into these exciting, hands-on and highly technical career fields. Program Description < < < This program prepares students to work in the engineering side of the maritime industry. Whether working onboard vessels in the "Engine Department" or shoreside in marinas, boatyards and shipyards. Students study marine mechanics, marine electrical, marine systems, wood, fiberglass/composites and welding metal fabrication. Students have the opportunity to take the exam for American Boat and Yacht Council Marine Systems Technician and accumulate up to 9 college credits through our relationship with Kingsborough Community College Maritime Technology program. Students are required to complete an internship in the maritime industry. Discover how New York Harbor School’s CTE programs offer hands-on learning and real-world experiences in marine science and technology, helping students build skills and earn industry certifications. CTE PROGRAMS Ninth graders are introduced to the various CTE programs via Harbor Class. As 10th graders, all students enroll in one of eight career and technical education (CTE) programs of study, leading to industry certification in a spectrum of marine science or marine technology pathways, and includes a continuum of work-based learning experiences that extend student learning from the school classroom into a real-world, work-related context. CTE Programs Summary Sheet Harbor Class < < < During their freshman year New York Harbor School students are introduced to all eight programs via Harbor Class. At the end of 9th grade, students will be asked to submit an application ranking CTEs in order of preference and to submit an essay/project that demonstrates their interest. Students will be notified of their acceptance to a specific CTE at the end of their freshman year. CTE coursework will begin sophomore year.
