Discover how New York Harbor School’s CTE programs offer hands-on learning and real-world experiences in marine science and technology, helping students build skills and earn industry certifications. CTE PROGRAMS Ninth graders are introduced to the various CTE programs via Harbor Class. As 10th graders, all students enroll in one of eight career and technical education (CTE) programs of study, leading to industry certification in a spectrum of marine science or marine technology pathways, and includes a continuum of work-based learning experiences that extend student learning from the school classroom into a real-world, work-related context. CTE Programs Summary Sheet Harbor Class < < < During their freshman year New York Harbor School students are introduced to all eight programs via Harbor Class. At the end of 9th grade, students will be asked to submit an application ranking CTEs in order of preference and to submit an essay/project that demonstrates their interest. Students will be notified of their acceptance to a specific CTE at the end of their freshman year. CTE coursework will begin sophomore year. Study marine mechanics, electrical systems, fabrication and complete industry internships. MARINE SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY The demand for well trained marine engineers, marine mechanics, marine technicians and metal fabricators is extremely high. The Marine Systems Technology program offers an entry way into these exciting, hands-on and highly technical career fields. Program Description < < < This program prepares students to work in the engineering side of the maritime industry. Whether working onboard vessels in the "Engine Department" or shoreside in marinas, boatyards and shipyards. Students study marine mechanics, marine electrical, marine systems, wood, fiberglass/composites and welding metal fabrication. Students have the opportunity to take the exam for American Boat and Yacht Council Marine Systems Technician and accumulate up to 9 college credits through our relationship with Kingsborough Community College Maritime Technology program. New York Harbor School’s Marine Biology and Research Program for those looking for hands-on, college-level marine science learning, research projects, internships, and career development. MARINE BIOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAM New York Harbor School's Marine Biology Research Program will jump start you in core marine science topics employing hands-on, problem-based learning strategies. Program Description < < < The MBRP is a three-year program that will jump start you in core marine science topics employing hands-on, problem-based learning strategies. In these challenging college level courses, you’ll begin by creating Aquatic Ecosystem Models to learn the basics in biology, ecology, and oceanography. As an intermediate student, you will choose one of two paths: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Independent Marine Research (Indy). In the GIS path, you’ll learn strong basic and intermediate skills in map making using ArcGIS. Then you’ll apply your skills on a real-world project or work in collaboration with an Indy scholar. As an Indy scholar, you’ll acquire college level reading, writing, and statistics skills while creating a project. As an advanced Indy scholar, you’ll finish your research project with the help of a scientist and, ultimately, use your own data to propose resource management solutions for the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. Along both paths you’ll learn how to manage projects, submit professional reports, and present at national and international conferences. You’ll also be given important career development opportunities such as career exploration techniques, resume writing, and ePortfolio development. Both paths lead to potential internships depending on your level of proficiency, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Depending on your path, you’ll be eligible for 18 college credits and various certifications that will give you a competitive advantage in college and industry. Research scholars in this program have gone on to universities such as Fordham, Columbia, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania with full scholarships to pursue careers in Marine Biology, Environmental & Mechanical Engineering, Finance, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and other challenging careers. The Welding & Fabrication program’s curriculum is based on the American Welding Society’s Fundamentals of Welding platform AWS Fundamentals of Welding Curriculum Package Overview . Subjects such as welding safety, four arc welding processes, three thermal cutting processes, reading welding symbols, weld inspection and others are covered in the course. These courses are directly aligned with the written and practical exams taken during the 12th grade. Discover Marine Affairs at NY Harbor School—studying human impact on marine environments and sustainability through local ecology and policy projects. MARINE AFFAIRS Marine Affairs is the multi-disciplinary study of the interactions between humans and the marine and coastal environments and resources and how they are managed with the ultimate goal of achieving sustainability. We use Governors Island Ecology and Environmental Projects, New York City Ecology and Development, New York State, and Federal Policy as the lenses and core content. Program Description < < < This program examines natural resources, their human impact, usage, and management. Specific case studies will illustrate the issues discussed; Harbor School, Governors Island, and New York City are our testing grounds for this content. Course Objectives 1. Explore and understand the complex and essential ways humans relate to and depend upon coastal and marine environments and resources. 2. Think critically about how humans transform and manage marine space and its components. 3. Reflect seriously on issues, challenges, and solutions involving complex marine and coastal management and sustainability problems. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Recognize multiple complex human uses of the marine and coastal environments and resources. 2. Describe significant issues and challenges in marine and coastal management and policy. 3. The Marine Affairs program will facilitate this project with guidance from Wendy Brawer at Green Maps. The map will illustrate students' investigation of Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Development Goals, and Climate vulnerabilities. The hands-on data collecting took place during the early days of the 2024-2025 school year; students walked on the island and collected observations on the topics above. Moreover, students took those observations and developed a map from the youths' perspective to guide people's experiences on the island. OCEAN ENGINERING The Ocean Engineering program introduces students to the discipline of engineering and engineering technology in an ocean environment by providing opportunities to learn as they design. Program Description < < < Students are exposed to several three-dimensional modeling programs, from Google Sketchup to Solidworks. Ultimately, the students will receive the Certified Solidworks Associate certificate by their senior year. Filling the severe demand for engineers and technology innovators has become a national priority, and the opportunities afforded graduates either heading to college or directly into the field has never been greater, especially in the maritime industry. By the end of their three years studying Ocean Engineering, students will have demonstrable skills in design and engineering and connections to the field that are unlike any other program in the country.
