Learn about our innovative NYC public high school on Governors Island, where we combine Academics with Career and Technical Education (CTE) to provide a unique college preparatory program built upon maritime experience. ABOUT New York Harbor School is a distinguished high school located on the picturesque Governors Island, offering a unique educational experience for students. With a strong emphasis on College and Career Technical Education (CTE) programs, our school prepares students for successful futures in various maritime fields. Our academic curriculum is rigorous, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for today’s world. Students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities, engaging in real-world projects that connect them to the maritime and environmental sectors. Mission Principal's Message Our Mission > > > The Mission of the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is dedicated to providing an exceptional and challenging educational experience that prepares students for successful careers and long-term financial stability. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our eight Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which emphasize Maritime and Environmental Sustainability. By fostering a collaborative community of passionate educators, engaged students, supportive families, and industry partners, we ensure that every student is equipped to tackle the academic, technical, civic, and workforce demands of the twenty-first century. > > > Principal's Message Michael Hojnacki mhojnacki@newyorkharborschool.org Dear Harbor School Families and Visitors, Welcome to the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School — where students don't just learn about the world, they learn in it. This year marked my first as Principal, and I can say with complete sincerity: this is an extraordinary school. Every morning, I step off the ferry to Governors Island and feel energized by the same thing that keeps our school thriving — the students. Their curiosity, joy, and daily smiles remind me that learning can be a source of positivity for our more than 500 students. Our school is unlike any other in New York City. Nestled on Governors Island in the heart of New York Harbor, we offer a one-of-a-kind experience rooted in environmental stewardship, maritime learning, and hands-on career preparation. Through our eight state and industry-certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs — Aquaculture, Marine Biology Research, Marine Policy & Advocacy, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, Vessel Operations, Marine Systems Technology, and Welding — students build real-world skills that open doors to college, careers, and civic leadership. We are especially proud to have launched our Pathways in Technology Early College High School, or P-TECH, program this year in partnership with SUNY Maritime College — the only P-TECH collaboration in New York City connected to a SUNY institution. This groundbreaking initiative allows students to earn both their high school diploma and an Associates Degree in a maritime-focused field, all while gaining valuable industry experience. It represents a bold step forward in our commitment to expanding opportunities and shaping the future of maritime education. Our academic offerings are robust and designed to prepare students for post-secondary success. We offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses, College Now classes in collaboration with local colleges, and have a dedicated college and career counselor to guide students through their academic journey. Our 11th and 12th grade advisory courses provide personalized support, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to successfully prepare for their lives beyond high school. Our students don’t just learn about environmental and maritime work — they actively participate in it through deep and meaningful partnerships. The school works hand-in-hand with the Billion Oyster Project to support the restoration of New York Harbor’s once-thriving oyster population. This hands-on environmental restoration project is integrated directly into our curriculum and offers students unparalleled access to field science, ecological data, and marine habitat restoration efforts — all while contributing to the health of our city’s waterways. We also work closely with Earth Matter NY, another Governors Island–based organization, to provide students with valuable experiences in composting, sustainable agriculture, and waste reduction. These partnerships embody our school’s mission: to engage students in real work that matters, in the very environment we are working to protect.

We had an action packed trip starting in Tokyo, where we visited temples and shrines in Meiji, Asakusa, and Akihabara. We also spent a day tasting incredible food at the Tsukiji Market, visiting Harajuku and Shibuya. From Tokyo, we headed toward Osaka - spending a night at the foot of Mt. Fuji, visiting Kyoto, and taking the bullet train. The entire trip was jam packed with culturally enriching, and truly extraordinary experiences. I have travelled all over the world, and this was by far one of my favorite and most rewarding trips. Spring 2025 Bahamas Davere Hanson, NYHS Faculty Each year, students in New York Harbor School’s Professional Diving program travel to The Island School on Eleuthera, Bahamas, for an intensive, week-long expedition that blends PADI dive certification with real marine science in one of the world’s most vibrant reef ecosystems. In partnership with Island School educators and the Cape Eleuthera Institute, Harbor School divers spend their days in the water completing Open Water and Advanced Open Water dives, practicing skills developed during their training in New York Harbor and pool sessions as they work toward industry-recognized diving credentials. A typical day in the Bahamas begins with assembling and checking their own gear, boarding small research vessels, and diving on coral reefs where they learn to conduct underwater surveys, identify reef organisms, and observe the impacts of climate change, pollution, and coastal development. When students return to campus each afternoon, they live and learn on a sustainable, research-focused island community powered largely by renewable energy, participating in seminars, reflection sessions, and ecological fieldwork that connects their tropical dive experience to marine restoration efforts back home. For many students, this is their first time traveling beyond New York City or seeing a coral reef firsthand, making the trip a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Over the years, the Bahamas expedition has become a defining milestone of the Professional Diving CTE pathway—an unforgettable journey that strengthens technical skills, deepens scientific understanding, and embodies Harbor School’s mission to prepare students for maritime college and career pathways through rigorous, real-world, ocean-based learning.

Students start out by taking SD 10, which covers researching colleges and other post-secondary pathways, navigating the college application process, and choosing a college major that matches their interests and goals, while evaluating the return on investment (ROI) of various options to make informed choices. They then move on to SD 11, which builds on SD 10 but focuses on choosing a meaningful career path and how to start the journey to the career and life of their dreams. By the end of both of these courses, students will know more about themselves and will have a greater understanding of what they want to do after they leave high school. Parents are elected through the NYHS PTA to serve on the SLT. One of the NYHS PTA co-presidents automatically serves on the SLT. School Leadership Teams are vehicles for developing school-based educational policies, and ensuring that resources are aligned to implement those policies. SLTs assist in the evaluation and assessment of a school’s educational programs and their effects on student achievement. SLTs play a significant role in creating a structure for school-based decision making, and shaping the path to a collaborative school culture. New York State Education Law Section 2590-h requires every New York City Public School to have a School Leadership Team. SLT team members are responsible for: participating in the development and review of the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP); ensuring that the budget is aligned to support the CEP; working collaboratively with team members to share ideas and concerns, and listening to the ideas and concerns of others; engaging in collaborative problem-solving that will lead to consensus-based decisions that meet the needs of all students; sharing the views of their constituencies with the team; and engaging in conflict resolution processes when necessary. Elections for parent positions on the SLT are held in the spring at a NYHS PTA meeting. SLT meetings are open to all parents and you are welcome to attend meetings or submit ideas or issues for discussion. SLT meetings are held online from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
