Qualified students who are interested have the option of taking: Student Development 10: Introduction to College Planning Student Development 11: Career and Life Planning Classes are led by our School Counselor and Kingsborough Adjunct Instructor, Shaun Panton . These are dual enrollment courses that allow students to earn both high school and free CUNY college credits, while preparing and planning for their future. Students start out by taking SD 10, which covers researching colleges and other post-secondary pathways, navigating the college application process, and choosing a college major that matches their interests and goals, while evaluating the return on investment (ROI) of various options to make informed choices. They then move on to SD 11, which builds on SD 10 but focuses on choosing a meaningful career path and how to start the journey to the career and life of their dreams. By the end of both of these courses, students will know more about themselves and will have a greater understanding of what they want to do after they leave high school. We hope to expand our College Now offerings in the future. - Trips Abroad | New York Harbor School
Chart a course! See where our students have travelled abroad for global learning and discovery. TRIPS ABROAD Travel gives students the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the world, gain new perspectives about themselves, and develop greater confidence and independence. Students return with enhanced communication skills, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for global diversity. While some international travel opportunities are connected to NYHS’s CTE Programs, most trips are coordinated through the company EF Educational Tours, which provides Urban Assembly students with enriching opportunities to explore destinations beyond our borders and engage in valuable educational and cultural experiences. < < < Ports of Call Summer 2025 Incheon, South Korea February 2025 Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza In February 2025, we visited Spain and explored Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza. Enjoy this video, where some of our student attendees share their thoughts and favorite moments from the trip! Trip photos Summer 2025 Japan Laura Desmond, NYHS Faculty In August 2025 we traveled to Japan for an unforgettable and life changing trip. We had an action packed trip starting in Tokyo, where we visited temples and shrines in Meiji, Asakusa, and Akihabara. We also spent a day tasting incredible food at the Tsukiji Market, visiting Harajuku and Shibuya. From Tokyo, we headed toward Osaka - spending a night at the foot of Mt. Fuji, visiting Kyoto, and taking the bullet train. The entire trip was jam packed with culturally enriching, and truly extraordinary experiences. I have travelled all over the world, and this was by far one of my favorite and most rewarding trips. Spring 2025 Bahamas Davere Hanson, NYHS Faculty Each year, students in New York Harbor School’s Professional Diving program travel to The Island School on Eleuthera, Bahamas, for an intensive, week-long expedition that blends PADI dive certification with real marine science in one of the world’s most vibrant reef ecosystems. In partnership with Island School educators and the Cape Eleuthera Institute, Harbor School divers spend their days in the water completing Open Water and Advanced Open Water dives, practicing skills developed during their training in New York Harbor and pool sessions as they work toward industry-recognized diving credentials. A typical day in the Bahamas begins with assembling and checking their own gear, boarding small research vessels, and diving on coral reefs where they learn to conduct underwater surveys, identify reef organisms, and observe the impacts of climate change, pollution, and coastal development. When students return to campus each afternoon, they live and learn on a sustainable, research-focused island community powered largely by renewable energy, participating in seminars, reflection sessions, and ecological fieldwork that connects their tropical dive experience to marine restoration efforts back home. For many students, this is their first time traveling beyond New York City or seeing a coral reef firsthand, making the trip a transformative experience that builds confidence, independence, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Over the years, the Bahamas expedition has become a defining milestone of the Professional Diving CTE pathway—an unforgettable journey that strengthens technical skills, deepens scientific understanding, and embodies Harbor School’s mission to prepare students for maritime college and career pathways through rigorous, real-world, ocean-based learning. The hands-on data collecting took place during the early days of the 2024-2025 school year; students walked on the island and collected observations on the topics above. Moreover, students took those observations and developed a map from the youths' perspective to guide people's experiences on the island. This will become integral to the students' experiences and enhance public knowledge of the island and its relationship to emerging issues of our time and developments to combat it, raising important questions. < < < A Peek at Our Day Explore our other CTE Programs

Become a PADI certified diver with New York Harbor School’s Professional Diving program. Gain entry-level and advanced certifications, scientific diving skills, preparing you for careers and internships in the maritime industry. PROFESSIONAL DIVING NYHS Professional Diving is the only program of its kind in the United States, training high school students as effective divers and putting them to work underwater on real environmental restoration efforts like the Billion Oyster Project. Program Description < < < Sophomore Year: Students are certified as entry-level Open Water Divers and improve their skills and knowledge as Advanced Open Water Divers. Over the winter students learn terrestrial rescue skills including CPR and first aid, emergency oxygen treatment, neurological assessments, and care for hazardous marine life injuries. In the spring they study and practice Rescue Diving techniques, in which they learn to prevent problems before they occur and aid and assist in the event of an emergency. Junior Year: Dive students work towards certification as NYHS Scientific Divers. NYHS is the only public high school in the country to offer this college-level certification, which enjoys full reciprocity at major universities and research stations. During scientific diver studies, students learn about diving physics and physiology, decompression theory and procedures, and how to assemble and supervise a safe and effective research diving team. Students learn to use photography and video equipment, dry suits, full face masks, underwater communications, harnesses and tethers, all of which are put to use as we assist the other seven Harbor School CTE programs in installing and monitoring BOP oyster restoration sites in the challenging, low-viz, strong current, cold water conditions of New York Harbor. Senior Year: Divers learn the basics of commercial diving, including search and recovery, surface supply air, piling/dock assessment and repair, non-destructive testing (NDT), and dive tendering. Seniors also learn the basics of equipment maintenance and repair. During the spring, some students pursue their Divemaster certification, allowing them to work in the recreational dive industry immediately upon graduation. Others begin work as interns in the professional diving industry, including cleaning tanks and educating the public at the New York Aquarium, and organizing and supervising Billion Oyster Project dives.
