Meet Clara Hours Locate a book Events Resources > > > Our School Library Media Specialist Clara Owen cowen@newyorkharborschool.org I’m the School Library Media Specialist at New York Harbor School, where I strive to make the library a place where all students feel seen, supported, and inspired. After a decade as an English and special education teacher, I did a program Teachers2Librarian for NYC Public School teachers looking to transition into the school library media specialist role and increase the supply of certified librarians in NYC! The move for me was motivated by a desire to focus on building individual connections, nurturing curiosity, and supporting lifelong learning. Whether it's through helping students discover books they love, supporting research and media literacy, or creating space for creative and social activities like puzzles, games, and clubs, my goal is to foster a community of engaged, thoughtful learners. When I’m not in the library, you’ll probably find me cuddling with my cat, traveling around New England, reading an intense book, biking around the city, watching Bravo, or exploring nature. - Aquaculture | New York Harbor School
Explore the Aquaculture program at New York Harbor School, where students tackle real-world challenges like overfishing and habitat loss by studying water chemistry, marine biology, environmental science, and animal husbandry through hands-on projects. AQUACULTURE Aquaculture is a growing industry, locally and globally, in response to habitat loss, overfishing and increased human populations. Students work to understand the fundamentals of water chemistry, marine biology, environmental science, and animal husbandry through real world projects. Program Description < < < Aquaculture is a three year program following the Introduction to NY Harbor Class in 9th Grade. Like all of our CTE tracks, Aquaculture includes a Work Based Learning component, Career and Financial Management and College preparation. Throughout the program, students study aquaculture species, with a focus on shellfish culture for restoration work. Other topics infused into all three years of aquaculture include, but are not limited to, research skills, technical drawing, geography, marine biology, genetics, taxonomy and environmental science. The field of Aquaculture is currently booming as a global industry and can provide a sustainable source of protein as land based conventional farming resources and wild fish populations continue to drop. Since Aquaculture is becoming more important to global food systems, as well as restoration work, it affords participants the opportunity to engage in global issues that employ a wide range of skills. - Marine Biology Research Program | New York Harbor School
New York Harbor School’s Marine Biology and Research Program for those looking for hands-on, college-level marine science learning, research projects, internships, and career development. MARINE BIOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAM New York Harbor School's Marine Biology Research Program will jump start you in core marine science topics employing hands-on, problem-based learning strategies. Program Description < < < The MBRP is a three-year program that will jump start you in core marine science topics employing hands-on, problem-based learning strategies. In these challenging college level courses, you’ll begin by creating Aquatic Ecosystem Models to learn the basics in biology, ecology, and oceanography. As an intermediate student, you will choose one of two paths: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Independent Marine Research (Indy). In the GIS path, you’ll learn strong basic and intermediate skills in map making using ArcGIS. Then you’ll apply your skills on a real-world project or work in collaboration with an Indy scholar. As an Indy scholar, you’ll acquire college level reading, writing, and statistics skills while creating a project. As an advanced Indy scholar, you’ll finish your research project with the help of a scientist and, ultimately, use your own data to propose resource management solutions for the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. Along both paths you’ll learn how to manage projects, submit professional reports, and present at national and international conferences. You’ll also be given important career development opportunities such as career exploration techniques, resume writing, and ePortfolio development. Both paths lead to potential internships depending on your level of proficiency, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Depending on your path, you’ll be eligible for 18 college credits and various certifications that will give you a competitive advantage in college and industry. Research scholars in this program have gone on to universities such as Fordham, Columbia, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, Brown, and the University of Pennsylvania with full scholarships to pursue careers in Marine Biology, Environmental & Mechanical Engineering, Finance, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and other challenging careers. They have also won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize in the prestigious NYC Science and Engineering fair over all public and private schools in the city. www.harborseals.org Marine Biology and Research Program At-A-Glance Instructor mgonzalez@newyorkharborschool.org Mauricio Gonzalez About Mauricio Courses Introductory Marine Research Intermediate Marine Research Advanced Marine Research Advanced Marine Biology Career and Financial Management Industry Recognized Certifications 6 college credits NOCTI Natural Resources Certificate Lab Safety & Chemical Safety Compliance Solutions Certificate EverFi certificates Career and Financial Management NYS CTE Endorsement Water, Wetlands and Marine Resources Management in the Scientific Research and Engineering Cluster < < < Harbor Seals Highlights Fieldwork Data COMING SOON! - History | New York Harbor School
Discover the story of New York Harbor School, a maritime-themed NYC public high school on Governors Island offering hands-on education in marine science, CTE programs, and environmental stewardship. HISTORY In 2003, New York Harbor School opened its doors on the fourth floor of the Bushwick Campus High School to 125 freshmen who lived almost exclusively in the surrounding neighborhood in Brooklyn. At the time, the New York City Department of Education looked to Harbor School to help improve the community’s local graduation rate, which had hovered for too long at 24 percent. Offering a maritime-themed academic program, despite its land-locked location, Harbor School infused the standard New York State Education Department Regents-based curriculum with high-interest, water-related topics and then brought those topics to life by exposing students to local water bodies, including New York Harbor, the Hudson River, the East River, and the Gowanus Canal. By 2010, Harbor School had improved the local graduation rate by more than 200 percent. In 2010, Harbor School moved to its new home on Governors Island and expanded its efforts to admit students from all five boroughs of New York City. Today, Harbor School serves a diverse group of over four hundred and seventy-five students, who come from neighborhoods across the city, both public and private middle schools, and whose life experiences and interests bring them to a high school focused on marine science and technology. All current students at Harbor School enroll in traditional New York State Regents-based academic courses and one of eight NYS certified Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs of study. As they prepare for college and train for industry, students cultivate an ethic of environmental stewardship and learn about and work toward protecting, conserving, and restoring the environment.

The expansion of the Harbor School on Governors Island marks a major $50 million investment in maritime and environmental education. The project doubles the campus from two to four buildings, adds 445 new student seats, and brings in new classrooms, laboratories, a gym, and—after strong advocacy from staff, parents, and community members—a full-sized competitive swimming pool essential to the school’s aquatic curriculum. The historic Building 555, dating back to 1938, is also being restored to provide 32,000 square feet of modern classroom space. Community voices played a decisive role in shaping the final design, with local leaders praising the School Construction Authority and the Trust for Governors Island for responding to feedback about the pool and other needs. Managed by the Urban Assembly, the Harbor School continues to offer a college-preparatory experience centered on New York City’s maritime industries, environmental stewardship, and career pathways in marine science and green technology. At the groundbreaking, Mayor Eric Adams highlighted how the expanded facilities will support students as they move into the city’s fast-growing green jobs sector, from renewable energy to emerging environmental technologies.
